Electronic Spell Checkers in an IEP: Accommodation Examples for Dyslexia

Short answer: An electronic spell checker can be written into an IEP or 504 Plan when a student’s disability makes spelling a barrier to showing knowledge, completing written work, or participating in the curriculum. The plan should name when the tool is allowed, what features the student needs, who will teach the student to use it, and how access will be provided across settings.

A vague line such as “may use technology” leaves too much room for inconsistent implementation. A useful accommodation describes the actual writing barrier and the support that removes it.

What is an electronic spell checker?

An electronic spell checker is any digital tool that helps a writer identify or correct misspelled words. It may be:

  • the spelling feature built into a word processor or Chromebook;
  • a phonetic spell checker that recognizes attempts such as fone for phone;
  • word prediction that suggests words after the student types several letters;
  • a talking spell checker that reads suggestions aloud;
  • speech-to-text paired with spelling and editing support; or
  • a dedicated handheld device or approved application.

These features are not interchangeable. Standard spellcheck may fail when a student’s attempt is far from the conventional spelling. A child with dyslexia may need phonetic matching, spoken suggestions, or word prediction rather than the basic red underline alone.

Can spellcheck be an IEP accommodation?

Yes. Under IDEA, IEP teams must consider whether a child needs assistive-technology devices and services. If the team determines that assistive technology is required for the child to receive a free appropriate public education, the public agency must make the needed device or service available.

A spell checker may be documented as:

  • an accommodation;
  • assistive technology;
  • a supplementary aid or service;
  • part of specialized instruction or an assistive-technology service; or
  • a combination of these, depending on the child’s needs.

The label matters less than whether the written plan clearly establishes access, training, settings, responsibility, and progress monitoring.

These examples are starting points. The IEP team should adapt the wording to the student’s evaluation data, writing tasks, and demonstrated needs.

General written assignments
For classroom and homework assignments in which spelling is not the skill being measured, the student will have access to an electronic spell checker with phonetic matching and spoken word suggestions.

Across school settings
The student will be permitted to use the approved spelling-support tool for written responses in general education, special education, homework, and school-based digital assignments, except when the IEP team has identified a task that directly measures unaided spelling.

Word prediction
When producing written work of more than one sentence, the student will have access to word prediction that displays and reads possible words aloud. Staff will teach the student how to review suggestions and select the intended word.

Editing support
After drafting, the student will use electronic spelling support and text-to-speech to review the document for spelling errors, missing words, and words that do not match the intended meaning.

Device and backup access
The school will provide access to the approved spelling-support features on the student’s assigned device. If that device or software is unavailable, staff will provide an equivalent backup method without delaying the assignment.

Training and independence
The student will receive direct instruction and guided practice in opening the tool, reviewing suggestions, listening to possible words, selecting the intended word, and correcting errors. Adult prompts will be faded as the student demonstrates independence.

Spellcheck is access, not spelling instruction

Allowing spellcheck does not mean the school should stop teaching spelling. A student with dyslexia may need both:

  • remediation through explicit instruction in phoneme-grapheme relationships, syllable patterns, morphology, and spelling conventions; and
  • access through technology that prevents spelling difficulty from blocking composition, content knowledge, or participation.

The distinction is similar to using audiobooks while continuing structured literacy instruction. The accommodation removes an immediate barrier. Instruction addresses the underlying skill.

When might a student need electronic spelling support?

Consider it when data show that spelling difficulty:

  • causes the student to avoid words they can say and understand;
  • reduces sentence length or written detail;
  • makes writing take substantially longer than it does for peers;
  • requires so much attention that the student loses the original idea;
  • makes work difficult for teachers or the student to reread;
  • limits performance in science, social studies, or other subjects;
  • creates a large gap between oral answers and written answers; or
  • prevents the student from independently editing written work.

The team should look beyond a single spelling-test score. Work samples, timed writing, error patterns, student interviews, classroom observations, and comparisons between supported and unsupported writing can show the functional impact more clearly.

What data can support the request?

A short trial can be especially useful. The U.S. Department of Education’s 2024 assistive-technology guidance explains that an IDEA evaluation is not always required before providing an AT device and that state or territory AT programs may offer demonstrations and short-term device loans.

What should the IEP specify?

A complete accommodation answers these questions:

  1. Feature: Does the student need basic spellcheck, phonetic matching, word prediction, spoken suggestions, or text-to-speech?
  2. Tasks: Is it available for paragraphs, essays, short answers, notes, homework, tests, or all written work?
  3. Exceptions: When is unaided spelling the specific skill being measured?
  4. Settings: Is it available in every class, at home, during remote work, and in extracurricular activities?
  5. Device: Which school device, application, extension, or dedicated tool will provide the feature?
  6. Training: Who will teach the student and staff to use it?
  7. Backup: What happens when the device, internet, account, or software does not work?
  8. Monitoring: How will the team determine whether the tool improves access and independence?

IDEA’s assistive-technology requirements include services, not only devices. Handing a child software without training, setup, maintenance, and classroom implementation may not remove the barrier.

Should spellcheck be allowed on tests?

That depends on the purpose of the assessment and the testing rules.

  • If the task measures science knowledge, reading comprehension, argument development, or another content area, spelling support may allow the student to show the intended skill.
  • If the task specifically measures independent spelling, the tool may change what is being measured.
  • State and district assessments can have separate accommodation rules. The IEP team should verify the current rules for each assessment rather than assuming classroom access automatically applies.

The IEP should distinguish ordinary classroom and curriculum access from assessment-specific decisions. “As permitted by the assessment” should not become an excuse to withhold the tool from daily instruction and assignments.

Spellcheck, word prediction, or speech-to-text?

Many students need a combination. For example, a student might dictate a first draft, use word prediction while revising, and listen with text-to-speech during the final edit.

Common school objections and useful responses

“It gives the student an unfair advantage.”

A disability accommodation is intended to provide access, not an advantage. Ask what skill the assignment is supposed to measure and how spelling errors interfere with measuring that skill.

“The student will become dependent on it.”

Independence does not require doing every task without tools. Ask the team to define independence as selecting, operating, and reviewing the support appropriately while spelling instruction continues.

“Everyone already has spellcheck.”

Universal availability does not prove effective access. The student may require different features, explicit training, consistent permission, headphones, or a tool that recognizes phonetic attempts.

“We need an AT evaluation first.”

An evaluation may be useful for complex needs, but current U.S. Department of Education guidance states that an AT evaluation is not required before every AT device or service can be provided. The team can trial tools and collect data while deciding what works.

“The technology department has not approved it.”

Technology staff can help with security and deployment, but the Department of Education’s guidance explains that the IEP team determines which AT device and service is necessary to meet the child’s needs.

Questions to bring to the IEP or 504 meeting

  • Which writing tasks are limited by spelling rather than by knowledge or ideas?
  • What happens to writing length, vocabulary, accuracy, and completion time when support is available?
  • Does the current spell checker recognize this student’s typical attempts?
  • Does the student need suggestions read aloud?
  • Who will teach the student to evaluate suggestions instead of choosing the first option?
  • Will the tool be available in every class and at home when needed?
  • What is the backup when the device or software fails?
  • How will teachers know when use is allowed?
  • How will the team continue explicit spelling instruction?
  • When will the team review data and adjust the tool or training?

The bottom line

Electronic spellcheck should not be treated as a reward, shortcut, or last resort. For a student whose disability makes spelling a barrier to written expression, the right tool can create access to vocabulary, ideas, academic content, and independent participation.

The strongest plan does more than grant permission. It identifies the needed features, tasks, settings, training, backup access, and method for checking whether the support actually works.
